ZEUS SALAS: BECOMING

Venue: Art Killers Gallery, booth G001

Details

At ART MARKET BUDAPEST, where art is usually encountered as a finished object, Venezuelan artist and performer Zeus Salas turns attention back to the moment of its creation. For a few hours, the art fair becomes his studio. Painting, often blindfolded, before the audience, he creates a large-scale work in real time, absorbing the movement, encounters, tensions and sensations unfolding around him. Surrounded by artists, collectors, professionals and art enthusiasts, the act of painting itself becomes part of the exhibition. In a space built around looking at art, the audience witnesses the instant in which it comes into being—immediate, intuitive and impossible to repeat.

HOMMAGE TO THE 1959 FRENCH BOOK EXHIBITION

Venue: Cháj Gallery, booth G309

Details

In 1959, just three years following the heroic Hungarian attempt at overthrowing the yoke of its Moscow overlords, the cultural scene in Hungary was struggling. Western literature and art was basically unattainable to the everyday citizen. In this setting, the French government set up an operation, under the premise of a French book exhibition, demonstrating the state of the art of book publishing, printing etc. Several thousand books were sent to be exhibited over a number of weeks at the Budapest Műcsarnok (Kunsthalle), representing the classical western art and literature, as well as the Avantgarde. The rumor was spread amongst the Budapest student population and the intelligencia, that the French were not necessarily expecting every last book to arrive back to Paris – what followed was nothing short of legendary: over a period of just two weeks, over 3000 books covering modern art, literature, science, travel, children’s books and more had disappeared, taken by visitors, many of whom were young artists and art students desperate for access to Western books and reproductions that were extremely difficult to obtain in communist Hungary. The books were exchanged and shared, shaping a vibrant and resilient cultural lifestream under the restrictive surface for years and decades to follow. In a nod to this, the Cháj gallery and artist Gergő Perlaki present their own twist in an interactive installation, doing their part in sharing arts with the masses.

Anna Juhász is a passionate lover of books – quite literally born into the world of literature and art, she grew up surrounded by writers’ studies and artists’ studios. This passion led her to establish the Literary Salon (Irodalmi Szalon) in 2010, which has since become a vibrant and active meeting point for the literary community. Today, her literary and multidisciplinary arts events attract thousands of people every month. She believes that a good story has the power to bring people closer together. She initiates conversations, connects literature with other art forms, brings the history of cafés to life, travels with writers, takes her programmes across the country, leads literary walks, edits books, and is equally at home in the worlds of film and theatre.
